Kuala Lumpur, Fri: The Election Court declared Shahrizat Abdul Jalil of  the Barisan Nasional (BN) as the properly elected representative of the Lembah Pantai parliamentary constituency.

Justice Datuk Shaik Fairuz Abdul Halim, in dismissing the petition by voter Jaafar Mustafa Awang Mat, held that the petitioner failed to prove his case beyond reasonable doubt.

The judge said he will give his grounds of judgment later. Shahrizat, who was in tears when the judge gave his decision, told reporters that she was relieved by the court’s decision and will continue to work for the people in the constituency.

“There is a lot to be done and I hope to get continued support from the constituents,” she said.
Jaafar, represented by Raja Aziz. Addruse, filed a petition for a declaration that Shahrizat, who is the Youth and Sports Ministry parliamentary secretary,  was not properly elected and that her election was null and void.  because she has allegedly committed corrupt practices

He claimed that International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz, while campaigning for Shahrizat in Kampung Pantai Dalam on April 23, presented three wheelchairs to senior citizens in that village to secure vote.

He also claimed that Kuala Lumpur Datuk Bandar Datuk Dr Mazlan Ahmad had on the same day offered land occupied by Kampung Pantai Dalam voters to them at Rm 2.60 per sq ft to induce them to vote for Shahrizet although the same land was offered to the residents as RM 4 per sq ft at 1992.
